A gamified (AI-integrated) Fitness Health App that engages beginners, returning users, and college students throughout their health journey, providing them assisted guidance with clear starting points and consistency.
College students often struggle to maintain consistent wellness habits due to demanding schedules, fragmented health tools, and limited social accountability. While many wellness applications support individual areas such as fitness, nutrition, hydration, sleep, or mental health, these tools typically operate independently, requiring users to switch between multiple platforms to manage their overall well-being. As a result, students experience inconsistent tracking, reduced motivation, and difficulty building sustainable routines.
Our interviews, user research, and empathy mapping activities revealed that many students understand the importance of healthy habits but struggle with follow-through because wellness activities compete with academic, social, and personal responsibilities. Participants frequently expressed a desire for a simpler, centralized, and more socially supported ways to manage their wellness goals, along with encouragement to remain consistent.
Existing solutions like MyFitnessPal, for instance, often overwhelm new or returning users with complex interfaces, extensive data entry requirements, and large amounts of health information presented upfront. Additionally, many platforms focus primarily on individual tracking rather than supporting motivations through social accountability and engagement. These limitations make it difficult for students to establish and maintain long-term wellness habits.
This problem is significant because student wellness directly influences academic performance, mental well-being, physical health, and overall quality of life. There is an opportunity to create a wellness experience that reduces friction, provides clear guidance for getting started, and helps students stay motivated through assisted guidance, ease of resource retrieval and navigation habit-building strategies.
We addressed the identified challenge by creating a mobile application called **SyncWell**, a **gamified (AI-integrated) Fitness Health App that engages beginners, returning users, and college students throughout their health journey, providing them assisted guidance with clear starting points and consistency.**
The idea behind our design was to foster a welcoming digital space and fitness environment new users and people who may not have used health apps for a period of time due to their ineffectiveness. There is a lot of information pertaining to fitness and nutrition and it can be quite overwhelming for someone who is new to the space. We wanted to keep our appâs layout simple and fluid so it would be easy for users to navigate through. Key features of our app are things such as our **dashboard** for a simple homepage and our **bottom âtool barâ** that allows users to navigate through the app seamlessly without trouble. Our design addresses the issue of new users being overwhelmed and quitting by making it easier and simpler to navigate for users to reduce stress.
*(Below): **Figure 1.** Our storyboard addresses the intended vision and outcomes of SyncWell, where a user named âBrianâ is accessing gym equipments for the first time but doesnât know where to start. Upon noticing an advertisement of SyncWell on his phone, he decided to give it a chance and download/install it on his device. After a period of time using the app, Brian knew his problem was solved when he has a clear starting point and ease of navigation and guidance from SyncWellâs reliable, accurate AI chat assistant. Brian describes his experience with the app as more motivated and consistent in his workout routines and gradually overtime, gains those muscles!! âď¸âď¸âď¸âď¸âď¸ đŞđ*

Upon download and installation of SyncWell, the user can either create an account (if they donât have one) or log in (if they already have an existing account) **(Figure 2).** They can personalize their digital app experience through a set of questionnaires presented within the early stage of access and fill out relevant options towards their health goals before choosing a payment plan thatâs based on their current comfort and trust within the app **(Figure 2a.).**
Once theyâve successfully inputted their goals, current priorities and payment type, SyncWell will proceed with a welcoming screen that signals the payment transaction was successful and that the app processed the usersâ inputs **(Figure 2b.).** For instance, as an example, if the user specified their current goal is to prioritize ânutritional fitnessâ and looking for a way to âtrack or count their nutritional caloriesâ in addition to âfood loggingâ, the app will direct them to the designated page with 100% accuracy â to the Nutrition Dashboard **(Figure 3)** where the user can select the category of recipes they want and find out more of each food recipe with an AI assistant at hand **(Figure 3a.).**
Drawing from another example, if the userâs goals had instead been targeted towards workout and fitness, then the app will direct them to another separate dashboard: the Workout dashboard **(Figure 4)** where users can find and browse through either: 1) the most popular / trending workouts or 2) search the different presented categories of workout routines. From then, they can select a category such as âStrengthâ if the user wants to train their muscles and filter by their level (beginner, intermediate, advanced), or retrieve more information about the workout whether textual or visual **(Figure 4a.).**
Lastly, users can customize their profile or change their settings if they ever change their mind about their fitness journey goals or if their progress has changed overtime **(Figure 5).** SyncWell allows user freedom and choice through customization of profile icons, usernames, and general settings like userâs privacy **(Figure 5a.).**
